The company used the same engine and parts across different brands to further reduce inventories and create flexible capacity. Because GM had limited backward integration (ownership of suppliers), it was able to keep fixed costs low and transfer some volume risk to suppliers, enabling GM to scale down production quickly when demand collapsed. To reduce inventories, GM aggressively cut prices by as much as 70 percent on its expensive cars-a move that would have been unthinkable under any other circumstances. The company acted decisively to cut costs: mothballing plants, laying off workers, rapidly scaling back production in its middle-market and high-end brands, and reducing the breakeven point on its lower-end Chevrolet brand by a third. You can choose a more abstract style, or dive deep and micromanage every detail. Despite the fidelity of the simulation, once you get the hang of the game it is fairly simple and easy to play. As you will see on 1stDibs, they have the same power and presence that Noguchi brought to his art. In the late 1950s, Noguchi designed for Knoll, creating such pieces as his dynamic Cyclone table and rocking stool.įor collectors, Noguchi’s furniture and lighting designs remain his most accessible work. His washi paper and bamboo Akari light sculptures, handmade in Japan, debuted in 1951. Ten years later, Herman Miller introduced Noguchi’s now-iconic glass-topped coffee table with an articulated wooden base. His first industrial designs were in Bakelite: a sleek clock-timer created circa 1932, and his famed Zenith Radio Nurse intercom, from 1937. Once back in New York, Noguchi was introduced to design by what would become a lifelong collaboration creating sets for choreographer Martha Graham. Inspired by Brancusi, Noguchi embraced abstraction and began to sculpt in the expressive, rhythmic style that would be the hallmark of his work. Noguchi was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1927 and traveled to Paris to work under Constantin Brancusi. Within three months, he left college to pursue art full time. At the same time, he took night courses in sculpture. He returned to the United States at age 13, went to high school in Indiana and enrolled at Columbia University to study medicine. Noguchi was born in Los Angeles to an American mother and Japanese father, and spent most of his childhood in Japan. Noguchi’s sculptures and designs share a common spirit: one of lyrical abstraction, tempo and flow and harmonious balance. A sculptor, painter, ceramicist and furniture and lighting designer, Isamu Noguchi was one of the most prolific and protean creative forces of the 20th century and a key figure in the development of organic modernism. In the January 2015 Stereophile, KR opined that NAD's Masters Series of products had taken a turn from the conservative to the adventurousevidence of which he saw in the Masters M17 (then $5499), which contained individual, updatable modules for digital video, analog video, digital audio, and analog audio. NAD M17 V2i preamp/processor (with Dirac): $6599 ★ While noting that the U-DIO8's output is limited to 24/192, KR tested it with several different two-channel processors and observed that "the sonic signature of each model of DAC remained audible," and concluded that miniDSP's new interface is "as indispensable to multichannel audio as a cream filling is to an Oreo." In his November 2018 column, Kal wrote of using the U-DIO8 to wrangle a trio of Benchmark DAC3 HGCs, with interesting and, at times, musically stunning results. This takes the USB output of any computer running Windows, Mac OS, or Linux, and converts it to AES/EBU or S/PDIF, thus allowing that computer, acting as a server/player, to drive three or four two-channel DACs, which appear to be as common as worms after a rainstorm. A solution has appeared in the form of the U-DIO8 multichannel interface from miniDSP. "There has been a serious impediment to the spread of multichannel playback among audiophiles." Thus did Kal Rubinson describe, in his September 2018 "Music in the Round" column, the scarcity of commercial multichannel D/A processorsat the moment, there appear to be only threeand its stultifying effect on hobbyists interested in surround sound. MiniDSP U-DIO8 Multichannel Interface: $375 ★ KR described his delight with the Anubis's sound, noting in particular its "sense of natural balance and smoothness," and praised this most recent Merging Technologies product as "a superb multichannel DAC that has redefined my entire system." (Vol.42 No.11 WWW) Add to that the Anubis's two headphone outputs and two analog inputsthe latter could accept, say, a stereo phono preamp, FM tuner, or other sourceand you have an unusually flexible, high-quality Swiss-made product at a distinctly reasonable price. It is, in other words, a pro-audio studio controller that does double duty as a domestic multichannel D/A processor. Merging Technologies MERGING+ANUBIS Monitor Controller Premium: $2499Īnother category-defying product from Swiss manufacturer Merging Technologies, the Merging+Anubis Premium combines a 32-bit 384kHz DAC with the processing power required to accept an eight-channel stream via Ethernet and concomitantly control up to eight studio monitors. If you already own an AV8802a, should you replace it with an AV8805? Quoth KR, "Maybe, but only if you're using it for more than just multichannel music playback." Nonetheless, Kal regards the Marantz AV8805 as "the standard bearer in home theater and multichannel audio." (Vol.41 No.11 WWW) The AV8805 is the fourth Marantz pre-pro used by Kal Rubinson, who assures us that "the most widely promoted features new in the AV8805 concern home theater … and video." What really interested KR were the carryovers from the AV8805's predecessor, the AV8802a, such as Marantz's Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module (HDAM) buffer output stages for each channel, and the AV8805's support of Audyssey's brand-new MultEQ Editor app. Marantz AV8805 preamplifier/processor: $4499 KR found the Sigma to be "easy to use and completely functional as a network link" for his own exaSound e38 and e38 MkII DACs. It supports PCM to 32/384, DSD to DSD256, and MQA (full unfold). The simple Sigma, which streams via wired or wireless LAN, is a Roon-ready endpoint, can function as an HQPlayer network audio adapter, and is compatible with UPnP, OpenHome, and AirPlay protocols. To those who already own an exaSound DAC, the exaSound Sigma Streamer offers an affordable and tidy alternative to the company's PlayPoint digital-source components. Remember that fitness is defined by an organism’s ability to survive and produce offspring in its environment. Explain why a rock pocket mouse’s color influences its overall fitness. They then compare amino acid sequences to identify variations associated with different coat colors. Color Variation Over Time in Rock Pocket Mouse Populations Evolution Revised October 2018 of 5 Activity Educator Materials 7. They then use a genetic code chart, to determine the amino acids encoded by a sequence of the Mc1r gene in different mouse populations. The activity begins with students reading a magazine article and watching the film. Students analyze genetic sequence data and draw conclusions about the evolution of coat-color phenotypes in the rock pocket mouse. This activity supports concepts covered in the film Natural Selection and Adaptation. If you are a movie nerd, then these owl names will be perfect for your pet. Looking for a classic name? Aunt Bess, she said, never had her period in her life. But part of this "undeveloped" nature was a lifelong heath problem. This actually delighted Marie as a child because she could wear Aunt Bessie's shoes, which were a size one! Marie said Bess was very frail and often sick, and she never weighed more than 98 pounds. Now, throughout our conversation, Marie continually emphasized just how small and "undeveloped" Bess was. Of course, I had to ask, "So why didn't they have children?" Marie learned close, patted my leg, and said she'd tell me. But she said Brandon simply looked over her collection and didn't show much interest in what she had to say about her uncle, so Marie kept the information to herself. Marie said she knew why Harry and Bess didn't have children and would have told author Ruth Brandon had she asked. She said she wasn't really a fan of the book, particularly the author's pet theory that Houdini was impotent, which at the time was getting a lot of press (it even got a mention on Seinfeld). I had brought along my copy of The Life and Many Deaths of Harry Houdini, then the first major biography on Houdini in 25 years, and asked Marie sign it for me, which she did. She said the dressing room attack on Houdini was not a accident Whitehead (she called his Whitestille) just rushed in and "bam!" She also told me Houdini loved making Chicken Paprika, which made me smile because I do too. (!) She said Bess died on the train in Needles while her sister (Marie's mother) was feeding her chicken gumbo. Weiss told Bess's mother that Houdini was "born on the boat" to America. "Bess smoked!!!" I wrote down at the top of my notes. In 1995 this was completely unknown, and it blew my mind. One bit of bombshell info was that "Aunt Bess" smoked. But Bessie lived on for another 17 years, and even lived with Marie and her mother (Bess's sister) for a while. Marie's memories of Houdini are limited as he died when she was still a child. Interestingly, I found myself asking more questions about Bess than Houdini. We settled into the hotel lobby near a large fireplace and chatted for an hour or more. Marie said she was impressed that I had come all this way just to hear her speak, and invited me to her hotel where we could talk more in private. Her talk was delightful, filled with first hand memories of her Uncle Houdini and Aunt Bess, and she brought along a few precious artifacts, including a children’s book given to Houdini by his half-brother, Herman.Īfter the talk I introduced myself. I had exchanged letters with Marie, so she knew I would be there. I was excited to hear the remembrances of Houdini's last living relative. In July 1995 I traveled to Colorado Springs to hear the late Marie Blood speak. If anything, it draws her more into focus and helps us understand all the demons she was fighting. It's nothing bad, and it certainly doesn't diminish the memory or legacy of this great woman. What I have here is an important (maybe even critical) puzzle piece that helps further complete her portrait. We just don't know all that much about her. But she's even more elusive than her husband. Why now? Well, anyone who's followed this blog knows I celebrate Bess here and find her fascinating. As far as I know, it's never been revealed in any book or article. It's the answer to why Harry and Bess Houdini never had children, and it was told to me by Marie Blood, Houdini's niece on Bessie's side. It's something I've shared with fellow Houdini buffs over lunches at the Magic Castle, but because of the personal nature of it, I've never felt I should "publish" it online or elsewhere. I've been sitting on this information for a long time. |
